Starting Simple: A Teaser and Introduction
Hey folks,
First and foremost, I want to address the elephant in the room. If you've found this, you're most likely in quarantine or social-distancing. You're most likely worried about your friends, your family, your parents, and your own safety and health. I didn't expect to start this blog in the middle of a global pandemic, but I can tell that now more than ever I want to hear people's stories. Maybe you're here to hear mine? Maybe some day you'll tell me yours.
I'll start. You can call me Emily. My pronouns are she/her/hers. I've got a lot of other identities and we'll probably explore them as we go, but at least you'll know how to refer to me when you're telling your friends and family about this great new blog you discovered!
Some other important things for you to know?
- I eat and cook all things vegan! I'll give you the history of our journey to veganism if that's something you are interested in, but long story short - our household has been entirely vegan for about three years now and my partner and I haven't even had meat at our favorite local restaurants (the hardest to give up were some wings at our favorite brewery) for almost two years now.
- I am fat! No, I do not identify as fat. I do not feel fat. It is not a feeling that comes and goes - it's all fact! I won't give you the nitty gritty details since those numbers can be triggering to folks, but on the "shopping options" measure of fatness, I identify as Mid Fat. Maybe we'll get into those details later as well.
I have seen a lot of fatphobia in the vegan community and I am hoping that together we can create a safe space for folks to explore a lifestyle that is so incredible for the world without feeling any shame.
I hope you're excited to create this community with me! I know that I especially crave community and connection right now. We need each other and I want to be here for you.
Emily
PS: It's not that cold where I live right now, but I thought a picture of me bundled looked more like how I look now than one with my mouth showing. Maybe I'll show you my smile when this is all over.
